Teckla Violanta Juel (born Suenssen) was a talented Danish writer and composer. She lived from 1834 to 1904. Her mother loved books, and Teckla grew up with two sisters who also became writers. Teckla wrote articles for magazines aimed at women. She also published many novels and short stories. Besides writing, she wrote and published several songs using the name Teckla.

Teckla Juel's Life Story

Early Life and Family

Teckla Violanta Suenssen was born on May 20, 1834. Her birthplace was Tønning, a town in the south of Jutland. She was the youngest daughter of Captain Johan Fedder Carsten Suenssen. Her mother, Margaret, loved literature very much. Teckla grew up with two sisters who also became writers.

Her father was a sea captain in Tønning. Teckla spent her early childhood there. When her father passed away in 1840, her family moved to Copenhagen. She had a happy childhood in their new home. In 1848, she moved to Norway for two years. She often traveled between Norway, Langeland, and Copenhagen.

Starting Her Writing and Music Career

When Teckla was 16, she published her first song. It was called "Fiskerpigens Klagesang" (The Fisherwoman's Lament). She wrote the music for it too. This song was very popular and was printed three times.

She then wrote more songs, including "Vemod" (Melancholy) in 1851. Other songs were "Længsel" (Longing) in 1856 and "Amors Rekrut" (Amor's Recruit) in 1858. Teckla also wrote two long poems. These were "Ivan Mikkel" (1860) and "Den sorte Ravn" (The Black Raven, 1861). For "Den sorte Ravn," she used the pen name Johan Fedder.

Publishing Novels and Stories

Teckla's first novel was called Caja. It was a romantic story. It first appeared in parts in a newspaper called Dagbladet. Then, it was published as a book in 1860. She did not use her real name for this book.

She also published other books without her name. These included Planterens Datter (The Planter's Daughter) in 1864. Another was I Jylland (In Jutland) in 1866. She used different pen names for other works. As Carl Krone, she published two short stories in one book in 1866. These were Hans Lindberg and Jeppe. As Thorvald Thure, she wrote Blancogade Nummer Syv in 1867.

Later Life and Works

In August 1867, Teckla married Axel Georg Juel. He was a schoolteacher at Aalborg Cathedral School. They had two children, Margrethe and Elise Henriette. After marrying, she lived in Aalborg for ten years. Her husband worked there. In 1876, her family moved to Copenhagen.

She continued to write many books. Her later novels included Hittebarnet (1870), Zigeunerbarnet (1871), and Karen (1874). She also published a collection of short stories called Paa Skraaplanet in 1891.

Teckla worked with her two sisters on a children's book. It was a collection of stories and poems called Ei blot til Lyst (1880). They also wrote a play together, En Skilsmisse (A Divorce) in 1872. This play was performed at Copenhagen's Royal Danish Theatre. It was called Et Ægteskab in Fare (A Marriage in Danger) in 1875.

Many of Teckla's books were translated into Swedish and German. She became quite popular in Germany. Teckla Juel passed away in Copenhagen on October 27, 1904.
