Tekla Griebel-Wandall (born February 26, 1866 – died June 28, 1940) was a talented Danish composer and music teacher. She wrote many different types of music, from songs to operas, and helped many students learn about music.

About Tekla Griebel-Wandall

Tekla Griebel-Wandall was born in Randers, Denmark. Her father, Theodor Johan Heinrich Griebel, and her mother, Camilla Joachimine Andresen, were both important in her early life. Her mother was a teacher.

Her Early Life and Musical Journey

Tekla started learning music when she was just seven years old. Her father taught her how to play the piano. Later, she took singing lessons. When she was fifteen, she went to a special art school called the Draw School for Women. There, she studied to become an artist who draws people and objects.

However, Tekla loved music even more. In 1886, she wrote her very first opera, called Don Juan de Marana. An opera is a play where most of the words are sung to music. This opera was finally performed much later, in 1931.

A Life of Teaching and Composing

When Tekla Griebel-Wandall was sixteen, she began teaching piano lessons. From 1889 to 1891, she studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. She learned about singing, piano, how to write music (composition), and music theory. Her teachers included Jørgen Malling and Orla Rosenhoff.

In 1896, she continued her studies in Dresden, Germany. A person named Nicole Leth helped pay for her studies. In 1902, she married Hans Frederik Wandall, who was a writer and studied religion. Tekla kept teaching music to support her family. Some of her famous students were the opera composer Peter Cornelius and the pianist Ellen Gilberg.

Even though teaching took a lot of her time, Tekla Griebel-Wandall wrote 103 musical pieces. These included songs, piano music, and even larger works like cantatas (pieces for singers and instruments) and operas. She also wrote books about music theory and even a novel (a type of storybook).

A successful student named Alice Shaw later became her "patron." This means Alice helped Tekla by giving her money. Alice funded the printing of four books of Tekla's music in 1928. Tekla Griebel-Wandall passed away in Buddinge, Gladsakse.
