Where is Tellarought Castle?

Tellarought Castle is a ruined building. Four of its walls are still standing, but they are partly covered with plants. The castle is right next to a road called St Brigid's Terrace. This road is off the R734 road. The R734 road goes from near New Ross to Tintern Abbey and Fethard. You can find the castle in a field. It is just west of the graveyard of St. Brigid's Roman Catholic church. This church serves the area known as Terrarath, which is another name for Tellarought.

History of the Castle

This building is a ruined tower house. A tower house was a type of home that was also a small fort. Tellarought Castle was built a long time ago, during the Anglo-Norman period. In the year 1307, the Sutton family owned the castle. Later, in 1597, a person named William Devoreux of Talleraght might have owned it. He received a special pardon from the queen. By 1641, Matthew Forde seemed to own the castle. However, by the mid-1650s, the castle might have already been falling apart.

The tower is on private farmland. It is close to a place called St Brigid's Well. Some local people believed this well had special healing powers. A small stream also starts near the castle. It flows past the tower house towards the southeast. The stream then goes under the road.

In October 2019, money was approved to fix the tower. The Irish National Monuments Service and Wexford County Council provided the funds. This work will help stop the tower from falling onto the nearby road.

What's in a Name?

The name Tellarought comes from an old Irish name, Tulaigh Reacht. Talleraght was another way to say this name in English. In 1837, a person named Mr. Lambert owned the castle. Local people at that time believed the castle was built by the Normans.
