What's the Story About?
The Rosso family is quite big! They have ten children, and their super-organized mom had a special way of naming them. She used a baby name book, picking names in alphabetical order. So, the children are named Abigail (Abbie), Bainbridge, Calandra (Candy), Dagwood (Woody), Eberhard (Hardy), Faustine, Gardenia (Dinnie), Hannah, Ira, and Janthina (Jan). Faustine and Gardenia are twins!
Moving to a New Home
The story begins when the Rosso family moves from a busy New York City apartment. They pack up everything and head to a New Jersey farmhouse. Each chapter in the book shares one child's thoughts. It shows how they try to get used to their new home.
Adjusting to Farm Life
For example, Woody tries to be a comedian, just like Woody Allen. Hardy wants to be a detective, like the famous Hardy boys. Hannah sometimes feels a bit left out in such a big family. Bainbridge works hard to create a local kids' football team. All the children also try their best to convince their parents to let them have a pet. But with ten kids already, their parents think a pet is too much!
The Big Surprise
The children finally get their wish for a pet. Their parents make a big announcement: they are going to have an eleventh child! This new baby will be named Kelly or Keegan. In the next book, Eleven Kids, One Summer, we learn it's a boy.
A New Pet for the Family
Since their parents "broke the rules" by having an eleventh child, their mom agrees to let them get a dog. But then, they find a lost kitten instead. They decide to keep the kitten! Just like their mom, they use the baby name book to pick a name. They choose "Zsa Zsa" or "Zuriel," using the last names in the book. The kids are super excited about their new furry friend.
