Tenzin Delek Rinpoche (born in 1950, died in 2015) was an important Tibetan Buddhist leader. He came from a place called Garze in Sichuan. He was known for helping his community in many ways. He worked to create social, medical, and educational programs for Tibetan nomads. He also cared deeply about the environment, speaking out against too much logging and mining. Tenzin Delek Rinpoche also tried to help Tibetans and Chinese people get along.

Early Life and Work

Tenzin Delek Rinpoche was born in Lithang, Tibet. He dedicated his life to helping people in eastern Tibet. He focused on improving their lives through education, healthcare, and religious teachings. He also worked to protect the beautiful natural environment of his home.

Challenges and Imprisonment

In April 2002, Tenzin Delek Rinpoche was arrested. He was accused of being involved in a bomb attack. In December 2002, he was found guilty and sentenced to death. Another person, Lobsang Dhondup, who was his assistant, was also sentenced and sadly died soon after.

Many groups around the world, including human rights organizations and experts from the United Nations, said that Tenzin Delek Rinpoche's trial was not fair. They believed he did not get a proper chance to defend himself.

In 2005, his death sentence was changed to life in prison. Many people continued to ask for his case to be looked at again. In 2009, about 40,000 Tibetans signed a petition asking for a new trial for him.

His Passing

After his death, there were calls for his body to be released so that his community could perform traditional funeral rites. However, authorities cremated his body without an autopsy.

Tenzin Delek's Message

Tenzin Delek Rinpoche once said, "Because I am a Tibetan, I have always been honest and dedicated to the well-being of the Tibetan people. That is the real reason why the Chinese do not like me and made false accusations against me. That is why they are going to take my precious life even though I am innocent."
