Natural range of Pinus teocote |
The teocote pine (scientific name: Pinus teocote) is a type of conifer tree. Conifers are trees that produce cones and usually have needle-like leaves, like pine trees. This specific pine tree belongs to the Pinaceae family, which includes all pine trees.
The teocote pine is special because it is endemic to Mexico. This means it naturally grows only in Mexico and nowhere else in the world. It is a tall tree, often reaching heights of 20 to 30 meters (about 65 to 100 feet). Its trunk can be up to 75 centimeters (about 30 inches) wide. The tree has a straight trunk and a thick, bushy top.
It grows in high places, usually at elevations between 1,500 and 3,000 meters (about 4,900 to 9,800 feet) above sea level. In its natural home, most of the rain falls during the summer months.
What is Teocote Pine Used For?
The wood from the teocote pine is a pale yellowish-white color. It is considered to be of moderate quality, meaning it's good for many uses but perhaps not for very strong structures.
This tree also produces a sticky substance called resin. This resin is collected and used to make turpentine. Turpentine is a useful liquid that can be used as a solvent (to dissolve other things) or in paints and varnishes.
Where Does Teocote Pine Grow?
The teocote pine is found across several regions in Mexico. Its natural habitat includes mountain ranges like the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Sierra Madre Oriental. It also grows in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. These areas provide the specific climate and elevation that the teocote pine needs to thrive.
