Early Life and Learning
Teresa Gali-Izard was born in Barcelona in 1968. She went to the Escuela Superior de Agricultura de Barcelona. There, she earned degrees in Agricultural Engineering. This field focuses on how to design and build things for farming. She also completed a special program in Landscape Architecture. This taught her how to design outdoor spaces. Both of these degrees were from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.
Her Work as a Landscape Architect
Starting Her Own Company
Teresa Gali-Izard leads a company called ARQUITECTURA AGRONOMIA. She started this landscape architecture firm in 2007 with Jordi Nebot. Their office is in Barcelona. For over 20 years, Teresa has worked on many landscape projects across Europe.
Amazing Projects and Designs
Her projects include TMB Park and Coastal Park. She also helped redesign Passeig de Sant Joan in Barcelona. One of her most famous projects is the Sant Joan Landfill restoration. This project turned an old landfill into a beautiful green space. It even won the European Urban Public Space award in 2004.
Teresa has also been a finalist in big design contests in Spain. These include the Cañaveral Park in Madrid and Central Park in Valencia.
Arquitectura Agronomia has completed many projects in Spain. Some examples are the San Telmo Palace garden in Sevilla and Arriaga Lake in Vitoria. They also designed Odesa Park in Sabadell and the Logroño Train Station park. Other works include Casabermeja Park in Malaga and Desierto square in Bilbao. They worked with FOA on the Auditorium Park in Barcelona. They also designed Cordelles Garden and Giner de los Rios Garden in Madrid. Outside of Spain, they created Parque de los primeros pasos in Caracas, Venezuela.
Before starting her own firm, Teresa worked as a freelance landscape architect. From 1989 to 2003, she worked with Roach Batlle in Barcelona. She opened her first design office in 1995.
Teresa often works with other architecture firms. These include FOA, AZPA, and Rogers Stick Harbour and Partners. She has also worked with famous architects like Eduardo Soto de Moura and Kengo Kuma.
Teaching Landscape Architecture
Teresa Gali-Izard has taught at universities in both the United States and Europe. In 2019, she became a Full Professor of Landscape Architecture. This was at the Institute for Landscape and Urban Studies (I-LUS) at ETH Zurich. There, she helped start a new master's program in landscape architecture.
Before that, she was an Associate Professor at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She taught there from 2018 to 2019. From 2012 to 2018, she was an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia. She even led the Department of Landscape Architecture from 2013 to 2015.
Teresa has also taught in master's programs in Madrid and at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. She has given lectures at many other schools. These include the School of Architecture of Oslo in Norway and the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Austria. She has also lectured in Switzerland, France, and Portugal.
