Terrell McKinney (born August 17, 1990) is an American politician. He is a member of the Nebraska Legislature, which is the law-making body for the state of Nebraska. Since 2021, he has represented the 11th district. He took over this role from Ernie Chambers, who was the longest-serving senator in Nebraska's history. McKinney is also the 14th Black person to serve in the Nebraska Legislature. He is the ninth Black member since the legislature became a single-house (unicameral) body in 1937.

What Terrell McKinney Does

Terrell McKinney works to create new laws and improve life for people in Nebraska. He focuses on important issues that affect families and communities.

Supporting Education and Fairness

In 2021, McKinney introduced a bill, which is a proposed law, to help students. This bill would require schools to teach financial literacy to elementary and middle school students. Financial literacy helps kids learn how to manage money, save, and understand basic economics.

He also introduced another bill to stop unfair treatment in jobs. This bill would make it illegal for employers to discriminate against someone based on their ethnic hairstyle. This means people could not be denied a job or treated differently because of their hair.

Helping Families with Food

McKinney supported a bill to expand the SNAP benefits. SNAP is a program that helps families buy healthy food. He worked with Republican John S. McCollister on this effort. Even though the governor, Pete Ricketts, tried to stop the expansion, McKinney helped to get enough votes to override the governor's decision. This meant the expansion of food benefits went through, which helped many families.

Community Involvement

Terrell McKinney strongly supports organizations that help the Black community in Omaha. He recognized an organization called Black Men United for their work. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this group gave out food to people who needed it. McKinney presented a special resolution to thank them for their efforts.

Working for Justice Reform

In 2024, McKinney was chosen for the Future Caucus Innovation Fellowship. This is a special program for young lawmakers from different political parties. They work together to create new policies. McKinney joined the group focused on criminal justice reform. This group aims to make the justice system fairer and more effective for everyone.
