Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Théobald Dillon (born in Dublin in 1745 – died near Lille in 1792) was an Irish-born general who served in the French army. He was known as the Count of Dillon. He was also a distant cousin of another famous general named Arthur Dillon.

Early Military Career

Théobald Dillon began his military journey in 1761. He joined a special army group called Dillon's Regiment. Over the years, he steadily moved up in rank. By 1780, he had become a lieutenant-colonel.

Key Battles and Awards

Dillon took part in important military actions. In 1779, he was involved in the Capture of Grenada (1779) and the siege of Savannah. These were significant events during his time as a soldier.

He also received several honors for his service:

  • In 1781, he was made a Knight of St. Louis. This was a special award for French military officers.
  • In 1785, he was allowed to wear the badge of the Society of the Cincinnati. This honor was for officers who had served in the American Revolutionary War.
  • In 1786, he was given a pension, which was like a regular payment, of 1,500 francs.
  • By 1791, he had reached the high rank of brigadier-general.

Tragic End

On April 29, 1792, something very sad happened to General Dillon. His troops were fighting Austrian forces near the city of Lille. They lost a small battle, and after this defeat, Dillon was attacked by his own soldiers.

The troops wrongly believed that Dillon had betrayed them or was a "traitor and aristocrat." Because of this misunderstanding and anger, they harmed him outside the city.
