That's Genius! was an exciting BBC children's TV show. It aired on BBC One from November 12 to December 17, 2003. The show ran for just one series.
Before the show, CBBC launched a cool competition. Kids were asked to send in their ideas for new inventions. Almost 3,000 ideas poured in! A group of judges picked the top five inventions. Experts then helped build working models, called prototypes, of these five ideas.
On December 17, 2003, viewers got to vote for their favorite invention. The winner was announced live on BBC One. The lucky winner received a special trip. They got a behind-the-scenes tour at the Epcot Center in Florida! The show was hosted by Angellica Bell, Kursty Groves, and Steve Wilson.
How Each Episode Worked
Most episodes of That's Genius! followed a fun pattern. Each show focused on one of the top inventions. You could watch as experts built the invention right in front of its young creator!
There was also a special activity for viewers at home. This activity was always linked to the invention featured in that episode. The show combined scenes filmed in a studio with exciting footage from different locations. Kursty Groves, who is an innovation expert, helped host the series. She worked alongside Angellica and Steve.
Meet the Young Inventors
Five amazing young inventors made it to the finals. Their brilliant ideas were chosen to be built into prototypes. Here are the finalists and their inventions:
- Gavin Calder - Power Lilo: This was a lilo (a type of inflatable raft) with a propeller powered by the sun!
- Joseph O'Neill - Choc Attack Cubicle: An arcade game where you controlled the action by moving on floor sensors.
- Sophia Dollery - Hologram Radio: A projector and screen designed to show music videos in a cool, holographic way.
- Robert Newcombe - Spy Bird: A remote-controlled plane shaped like a bird. It even had a tiny digital camera built in!
- Charlie Watts - Laser Speed: A device for cars that would tell the driver if they were going too fast.
The Big Final Show
The final episode aired on December 17, 2003. This was the day the winner was chosen! Viewers voted for their favorite invention by calling in. The exciting results were announced live from the CBBC studio.
