About the Comic Strip
David Lynch first thought of the idea for this comic strip in 1973. He was feeling very angry at the time. The comic strip was first printed in a newspaper called the LA Reader. It appeared there from 1983 until 1992. It was also printed in another comic magazine called Cheval Noir.
What It's About
Each comic strip starts with a short description. It talks about a dog who is so angry he cannot move. He cannot eat or sleep. He can only just barely growl. He is so full of anger that he is almost stiff.
How It Looks
Every comic strip looks almost the same. The first three pictures, called panels, are identical. They show a black dog growling. He is tied to a post in a yard with a chain. There is a tree on his left and a house wall with a window on his right.
The fourth panel is like the first three. But in this panel, it is nighttime. A circle of light shines from the house's window.
The Characters and Their Words
In one or more of the panels, a speech bubble appears. This bubble shows that someone from the house is speaking. You never see these people. They are members of a family: Bill, Sylvia, Pete, or Billy, Jr.
What they say is often a wise saying or something that doesn't seem to make sense. For example, they might say, "If everything is real... then nothing is real as well." Another saying is, "It doesn't get any better than this."
