The Animal Family is a children's novel written by American poet Randall Jarrell in 1965. It features beautiful illustrations by the famous children's book artist Maurice Sendak. This book was recognized as a Newbery Honor book in 1966, which means it was one of the best children's books published that year. Many adults also enjoy reading this special story.
The Story of the Animal Family
The book tells the heartwarming story of a very unusual family. A lonely man lives in a cozy log cabin by the sea. One day, he finds a mermaid, then a boy, followed by a friendly bear, and finally a lynx. All of these characters are orphans, meaning they don't have their original families.
They all come together to live in the cabin. As they share their lives and create their own special stories about where they came from, they form a unique and loving family. It's a tale about finding belonging and creating your own home with people (and animals!) who care about you.
A Film Version in the Works
In 2017, a Japanese animation studio called Toei Animation started a project to turn The Animal Family into a movie. They wanted to make it using stop-motion animation, which is a cool technique where objects are moved tiny amounts between individually photographed frames, making them appear to move on their own.
The project used something called "crowdfunding." This is when many people donate small amounts of money online to help a project get started. The goal was to create a short, three-minute pilot film. This pilot would show how a full one-hour movie could look. The project quickly raised a lot of money, reaching 68% of its goal in just two days! The Japanese title for this film project is The Story of the Mermaid that went up to Land.
