How The Barras Started
The Barras was created by James and Margaret McIver. They started this market many years ago, between the two World Wars. Some of the smaller market halls still have the McIver name today.
The Famous Barrowland Ballroom
The main building at The Barras is home to the Barrowland Ballroom. This famous music venue was rebuilt after a big fire in 1958. It reopened its doors in 1960. Many world-famous bands and artists have played concerts here.
The original building first opened in 1934. It was built in a busy trading area east of Glasgow city centre. The Barrowland building has large halls on the ground floor. These halls are used for the weekend markets. Above them is a big dance hall, protected from the weather. The front of the building has a cool, bright neon sign.
Looking to the Future
In 2016, fewer people were visiting the market stalls. The city council started looking at ideas to make the area new and exciting again.
Where to Find The Barras
The Barras is located on a main road called Gallowgate. This road connects the city centre to areas like Parkhead and Celtic Park. Because of this, you can find many shops and places to eat and drink nearby. These places are often popular with fans of the Celtic Football Club.
