The Cat's Quizzer is a fun children's book written and drawn by Dr. Seuss. His real name was Theodor Geisel. Random House published the book on August 12, 1976. In March 2021, the company that manages Dr. Seuss's books decided to stop publishing this book.
What's the Story About?
The book starts with The Cat in the Hat introducing two characters, Ziggy and Zizzy Zozzfozzel. He says they got a perfect score on a quiz, but all their answers were wrong! Then, the Cat in the Hat asks the reader a question over and over: "Are you smarter than a Zozzfozzel?"
The book is full of different questions. Some are easy to answer, while others are quite tricky. The questions are so varied that they even make the Cat in the Hat feel tired!
Why the Book Was Stopped
On March 2, 2021, Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced they would stop publishing The Cat's Quizzer and five other books. They explained that some pictures in these books were seen as "hurtful and wrong."
The main reason for stopping The Cat's Quizzer was a picture on page 11. This drawing showed a yellow character wearing a type of hat often seen in some Asian cultures. The picture had a caption that asked, "How old do you have to be to be a Japanese?" This image and question were considered to be a stereotype. A stereotype is an oversimplified and often unfair idea about a group of people.
After these books were stopped, many people wanted to buy other Dr. Seuss books. This made sales of his other books go up a lot on websites like Amazon. News reports said that nine out of the top ten best-selling books were by Dr. Seuss, not counting the ones that were removed. Because the stopped books became very rare, their value to collectors went up. Because of this, eBay also decided to remove these books from sale on their website.
