The Cat Who Thought He Was A Tiger is a charming picture book written and illustrated by Polly Cameron. It was first published in 1956. This story follows a unique striped cat who believes he is a fierce tiger, even though he lives in a cozy house with his family.
About the Story
This delightful book tells the tale of a striped cat with a big imagination. He is quite different from his four brothers and sisters. While they enjoy playing, eating, and sleeping together inside the house with their human friends, a boy and a girl, this special cat has other ideas.
A Cat's Big Dream
The striped cat truly believes he is a tiger. Because of this, he tries to act like one. He prefers to live alone in the backyard, thinking that's what wild tigers do. Instead of eating regular cat food, he tries to eat grass. He also chooses to sleep high up in a tree, just like he imagines a tiger would. He spends his days doing what he thinks tigers do, separate from his family.
The Circus Adventure
One day, the striped cat decides to visit a circus. There, he finally meets a real tiger! Excited, he approaches the tiger and asks to play, saying, "You're a tiger and I'm a tiger." He expects the tiger to agree and join him in tiger games.
Learning Who You Are
However, the real tiger quickly corrects him. The tiger looks at the little cat and says, "You? a TIGER? No You're not, .. You're a little cat." This simple statement is a big surprise for the striped cat. Hearing the truth from a real tiger makes him realize something important. He is not a tiger; he is a cat!
The cat is actually very happy to learn this. He quickly runs back home to his house. There, he excitedly tells everyone that he is, in fact, a cat. From that moment on, the striped cat joins his brothers and sisters. He plays, eats, and sleeps with them, finally enjoying life as a happy house cat.
