The Children's Magazine was a very important magazine for young people in the United States. It was the first magazine ever made just for kids in America! However, it only came out for a short time, from January to April in 1789.

About The Children's Magazine

This special magazine was published in Hartford, Connecticut. It was printed by a company called Hudson & Goodwin. People learned about the magazine from a notice in a local newspaper. This notice appeared on February 2, 1789.

The magazine was made for families and schools. It aimed to help children aged seven to twelve. The goal was to help them move from easy spelling books to more difficult writing. Teachers had wanted a resource like this for a long time.

What Was Inside?

Each issue of The Children's Magazine had 48 pages. These pages were printed on good paper. The magazine included different types of articles. Some pieces were about school subjects, like geography. There were also poems and stories about good social values.

Why Did It Stop?

The Children's Magazine only published four issues. One reason it stopped was a lack of new stories. The editor had to use material from another magazine. This other magazine was The Juvenile Magazine from London.

Another big reason for it stopping was the postal system. In 1789, the United States postal system was new. It was not ready to deliver magazines across the country. This made it hard for the magazine to reach enough readers.
