Dorilton's Amazing Design
The Dorilton was designed by a company called Janes & Leo. This company was made up of two architects, Elisha Harris Janes and Richard Leopold Leo. They designed the building for a real estate developer named Hamilton M. Weed. You can find The Dorilton at 171 West 71st Street, right near Broadway.
Beaux-Arts Style
The building is famous for its very fancy and rich Beaux-Arts style. It's made of limestone and brick. The outside has huge sculptures and beautiful balconies with detailed railings. The roof is made of copper and slate and has three stories.
In 1998, experts from the Walter B. Melvin architectural firm carefully fixed up the outside of the building. They restored the stone, the decorative terra-cotta (a type of clay), the chimneys, and the roof.
What Experts Say
Many people think The Dorilton is a very special building. An expert on architecture named Andrew Dolkart believes it might be "the most flamboyant apartment house in New York." He means it's one of the most showy and exciting buildings. He points out its "French-inspired" sculpted figures and a giant iron gate. This gate reminds him of the gates that protect French palaces.
Another architecture expert, Francis Morrone, also thinks it's one of the best apartment buildings in New York City.
Landmark Status
Because of its unique design and history, The Dorilton has been recognized as an important building. It was named a New York City landmark in 1974. Later, in 1983, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a nationally important historic place.
