The Dot is a popular children's book from 2003. It was written and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds. The story is about a girl named Vashti who thinks she can't draw. But then she discovers her amazing artistic talent! Candlewick Press published this inspiring book.

What's the Story About?

The main character in The Dot is a girl named Vashti. She believes she can't draw anything at all. One day, her art teacher asks her to draw. Vashti gets frustrated and says she can't even draw a polar bear in a snowstorm.

Her teacher gives her a simple but powerful challenge. "Just make a mark," the teacher says, "and see where it takes you." Vashti quickly draws a small dot on her paper. The teacher then tells her to sign her name on it.

The next week, Vashti is amazed. Her teacher has framed her simple dot and hung it in the office! Seeing her dot displayed makes Vashti think. She realizes she can do better than just one small dot.

This moment inspires Vashti to start drawing many different dots. She creates elaborate and colorful dots. Through this process, she discovers that she truly is an artist. Later in her life, Vashti meets a boy who feels he can't draw a straight line. This meeting leads to a new adventure for her.
