The Folk of Gloucester facts for kids
The Folk of Gloucester is a super interesting museum located right in the heart of Gloucester. It's special because it's housed inside two really old buildings! One is a Tudor merchant's house, which means it's from the time of kings and queens like Henry VIII. The other is a town house built in the 1600s. You can find this museum at 99–103 Westgate Street. It's all about the everyday lives and social history of people from Gloucestershire over hundreds of years.
Did you know a famous person named Bishop Hooper might have stayed in these very buildings? He was a bishop who was burned at the stake in front of St Mary de Lode Church in 1555. This happened the night before that sad event.
The museum has had a few different names over the years! It used to be called the Gloucester Folk Museum. Then, in 2016, it changed its name to Gloucester Life. But in 2019, it rebranded again to its current name, The Folk of Gloucester.
