The Fort Leavenworth Lamp started in 1971. On April 8, 2011, it celebrated 40 years of being printed. A U.S. Army instructor, Lt. Col. Robert Simpson, named the newspaper. He chose the name after the Fort Leavenworth Lamp symbol. This symbol was picked for the Command and General Staff College in 1956.
In 1991, the newspaper's name was changed to "The Fort Leavenworth Lamp." This was done to avoid confusion with "The Lamp," a magazine from the Exxon oil company.
