The story of these gardens began in 1982 with a place called the Kiwanis Water Conservation Park. This park was 2.5 acres and had more than 300 types of desert-friendly plants. It was built on land given by the Las Vegas Valley Water District.

In 1990, after some updates, the park was renamed the Desert Demonstration Gardens. It grew to have over 1,200 types of plants, mostly from the deserts of the American Southwest.

In early 2007, the Desert Demonstration Gardens closed. Many of its mature plants, some as tall as 84 inches, were carefully moved to a new home. The Gardens officially reopened on June 8, 2007, at their current location within the Springs Preserve.
