What Happens in the Movie?
This movie follows Cassie Nightingale as her birthday gets closer. She tells her husband, Jake Russell, that she wants a big party. She hopes all her friends and family will be there. Jake's older children, Brandon and Lori, are both graduating soon. Cassie feels this might be the last time everyone is together.
Planning Cassie's Birthday Party
Jake's father-in-law, George, and his new wife, Gwen, want to host Cassie's party. They live at Grey House, a bed and breakfast. But Grey House is already booked for that special night. Later, Gwen gets a surprise when her son, Drew, shows up. Drew is in town for business and to plan his wedding. Gwen loves him, but she worries because he often avoids taking responsibility.
Unexpected Problems and Blame
Cassie's friend, Martha Tinsdale, has a problem. A heat wave is causing a bad smell near her new wedding planning business. Cassie tries to help Martha by giving her special incense. But this makes the smell even worse! Meanwhile, Drew cancels his wedding plans. He can't afford it because a page of a contract went missing from a bag Cassie gave him. He accidentally signed away his product instead. Both Drew and Martha are upset and blame Cassie for her "help."
A Family Mystery Unfolds
Cassie asks her stepdaughter, Lori, to return a library book. Lori is a journalism student. At the library, Lori finds a book about Elizabeth Merriwick, also known as the "Grey Lady." This is Cassie's great-aunt, and her picture is in Cassie and Jake's living room. Lori learns that the Grey Lady and Cassie share the same birthday. It's also the day the Grey Lady disappeared a long time ago. People thought she was taken away.
Lori then finds Merriwick's old diary hidden in Grey House. She notices many things in the diary match what's happening now. This includes the heat wave and a mysterious fire at Cassie's store, Bell, Book & Candle. The fire damages the store and nearby buildings. Lori starts to worry that Cassie might be in danger.
More Surprises and Worries
Back at the Russells' home, Mia discovers that the Grey Lady painting is torn. She takes it home to fix it, using her art skills. Brandon and his new girlfriend, Tara, decide to get married quickly. But they rush home when Cassie suddenly faints because she's dehydrated.
Drew makes some harsh comments to Cassie. Because of this, he is questioned about the fire at Cassie's store. Gwen doesn't believe her son started the fire. She uses the money they saved for Cassie's party to help him.
The Birthday Party and Big Reveals
The morning of Cassie's birthday arrives. Mia returns the fixed painting to Cassie. Drew approaches Cassie while she's walking. Cassie gives him advice about relationships and being responsible. Two hours later, Cassie still hasn't come home. Jake gets worried and also notices the Grey Lady painting is missing again.
A search for Cassie begins. It looks like someone broke into Grey House. Jake, Brandon, Lori, George, and Gwen carefully go inside the dark house. They find Cassie dressed up! She leads them to the backyard. She has decorated it for her birthday with a fun Halloween and harvest theme. She even has costumes for everyone. Cassie planned her own party, but she wanted her family and friends to arrive together.
Lori gives Cassie an old book written by Edward Whymark. This was a fake name for Elizabeth Merriwick! The Grey Lady wasn't taken away. She ran off to Texas with her sweetheart, Andrew Whymark. She started a new life and lived a long, happy one. Cassie tells Lori how good her detective skills are. She knows Lori will do great on her journalism project.
A masked Drew arrives with the Grey Lady portrait. He had it checked at the local museum. He tells Mia the museum loved her repair work and wants to hire her. Drew also makes up with his mom. He says Cassie helped him understand his responsibilities. It's then revealed that the fire at Cassie's store was an accident. A painter's rag fell into a box of paper, causing the fire. Brandon and Tara announce they still plan to get married, but in two years. Jake is very happy and dances with Cassie. Cassie is content, surrounded by her party guests.
