The Happy Lands is a British movie from 2012. It tells the story of a coal-mining town in Fife, Scotland. The film is set during a big event in history called the General Strike of 1926. This strike happened when many workers across the United Kingdom stopped working to ask for better conditions. The movie was released on February 17, 2012. Many people in the film speak Scots, which is a language spoken in Scotland. A cool fact about the movie is that many actors were not professionals. They were often related to the real miners who lived through the 1926 strike.
What is The Happy Lands About?
The story of The Happy Lands begins in a mining village called Carhill. A miner gets hurt while working deep underground. When the mine owner is asked about making things safer, he says the miners cannot work unless they agree to longer hours and lower pay.
The Big Strike of 1926
The movie then shows the different parts of an eight-month-long strike. This strike involved coal miners all over Britain. The Trade Union Congress (a group that helps workers) started a bigger strike, called the General Strike, to support the miners. The film also reminds us that many of these brave miners had fought in the First World War. They had been heroes for their country, and now they were fighting for fair treatment at home.
Who is in The Happy Lands?
The movie features a mix of experienced and new actors. Many of them brought a special realness to their roles. This is because some actors were actual family members of the miners who lived through the 1926 strike.
