The Honeycombs (Oregon) facts for kids
The Honeycombs are amazing rock formations found in a canyon. You can find them in Malheur County, Oregon. They are on the eastern shore of Owyhee Lake, north of a place called Leslie Gulch. Imagine a place with cool, unique rocks that look like giant honeycombs!
This special area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The BLM is a government group that takes care of public lands. They help protect nature and allow people to enjoy these places. A nearby camping spot, Bensley Flat, is on land managed by the United States Bureau of Reclamation. This group helps manage water and power projects.
A Special Place for Nature
The Honeycombs area is also a special place called a Research Natural Area. This means it's protected for scientists to study nature. This area is about 6,143 hectares (or 23.7 square miles) big.
The land here goes from about 975 meters (3,199 feet) up to 1,310 meters (4,298 feet) high. The main plants you will see are sagebrush and different types of bunchgrass. These plants are important for the animals that live there.
How to Visit The Honeycombs
Getting to The Honeycombs can be an adventure! One way is to take a boat across Owyhee Lake.
You can also reach the area by driving a 4-wheel-drive vehicle. This road goes northeast along a place called Juniper Ridge. From there, you can walk on a trail that follows the ridge. This trail is sometimes called a "mustang trail" because wild horses used to use it. It leads right to the head of the canyon.
