The Intruder: A Thrilling Novel

What's the Story About?

The story follows sixteen-year-old Arnold Haithwaite. Arnold lives a quiet life in a place called Skirlston. He works as a "sand pilot," which means he guides groups of tourists safely across the wide, often tricky sands. He does this job when the Admiral, who usually does it, isn't feeling well.

Arnold's peaceful life suddenly changes when a mysterious stranger arrives. This new person claims to be the real Arnold Haithwaite. Life at Cottontree House, where Arnold lives with his father, becomes very difficult. The stranger slowly starts to take over their lives, making Arnold feel like an outsider in his own home.

No one seems to believe Arnold or understand his problem. Only two newcomers, Peter and Jane, show him any sympathy. But even they are not entirely sure if Arnold is telling the truth or just imagining things.

The tension builds until everything comes to a dangerous climax. Arnold finds himself battling against the powerful sea during a terrible storm. The stranger is close behind him, and Jane is trapped by the quickly rising tide in the old ruins of a church. Arnold must fight for his life and for the truth.

From Book to TV Screen

The Intruder was so popular that it was made into a British television series. Granada Television produced the show in 1971, and it was broadcast in 1972. The series starred James Bate as Arnold, with Milton Johns and Sheila Ruskin also in key roles. There were eight exciting episodes in total.
