The Jennie Project is a Disney Channel Original Movie that came out in the summer of 2001. This heartwarming film is based on the book Jennie by Douglas Preston. It tells the story of a smart chimpanzee named Jennie who can talk using American Sign Language.
Story of Jennie
The movie begins with Dr. Hugo Archibald (Lance Guest), a scientist who loves animals. He often brings different exotic animals home. His latest arrival is a chimpanzee named Jennie. Dr. Archibald's son, Andrew (Alex D. Linz), sometimes feels like his dad is too busy with his work.
Andrew's mom, Lea (Sheila Kelley), is not sure about having a chimpanzee in the house. She thinks Jennie might cause too much trouble. But Andrew and his sister, Sarah (Abigail Mavity), instantly love Jennie. What makes Jennie special is that she is learning to understand and use sign language to communicate.
Jennie Joins the Family
Jennie quickly becomes a big part of the Archibald family. Andrew and Jennie form a very close bond. Jennie loves to do things with Andrew, like watching baseball games and reading comic books. She is also there for Andrew when he has disagreements with his father.
A doctor named Pamela Prentiss (Sheryl Lee Ralph) starts working with Jennie to help her learn more sign language. Dr. Prentiss has different ideas about how to care for Jennie. She tries to teach Jennie in a way that the chimpanzee doesn't quite understand. But Lea Archibald finds a better way that Jennie responds to.
Challenges and Decisions
Dr. Prentiss tries to convince Hugo to let Jennie live in the science lab where she works. Hugo doesn't want to at first. However, Jennie starts to cause some mischief, like taking mail from the mailman and eating the neighbors' flowers. Because of this, Jennie is taken to court. The court decides that Jennie must go to a science lab.
Eventually, the family makes a big decision: they decide to send Jennie back to Africa, where she originally came from. The special friendship between Jennie and Andrew helps the whole Archibald family become closer than ever before.
