Building Design and Features
The Kean is a beautiful example of Art Deco style. This design was popular in the 1920s and 1930s. It also has some elements that remind people of Romanesque architecture, which is a much older style.
How Tall is The Kean?
This building is very tall, reaching sixteen stories high. Each floor has four apartments, making it a home for many families.
What is it Made Of?
The main part of The Kean is built from brick. The entrance is very fancy! It has bright orange terra cotta decorations. You can also see special round designs called medallions and tall, classic Corinthian columns.
Unique Roof Design
The building's vertical lines go all the way up to the roof. The roof itself is tiled and shaped like a hip roof. It has a cool red and white checkerboard pattern around the edges. You might even spot some projecting gargoyles, which are decorative stone figures!
History of The Kean
The Kean was designed by an architect named Charles Noble. He finished designing it in 1931.
Building During the Great Depression
When The Kean was built, the Great Depression had just started. This was a very tough time for the economy. Because of this, The Kean was one of the last big apartment buildings constructed along Jefferson Avenue for a long time. No other large residential buildings were built there until after World War II.
The Kean Today
Today, The Kean is still used as an apartment building. It continues to be a home for people in Detroit, keeping its history alive.
