"The Kite That Went to the Moon" is a fun children's story written by Evelyn Sharp. It came out in 1900 as part of a book of short stories called The Other Side of the Sun.

Story Summary

This story is about a young boy named Jerry. He built the biggest kite in his village. His friend, Chubby, who was the woodcutter's daughter, helped him. She painted a moon and stars on the kite. Jerry was very proud of his creation.

The Kite's First Flight

Jerry wanted his kite to fly all the way to the moon. He took it to a field during the day. All the other kids watched as he tried to fly it. But the kite just wouldn't go up! Jerry felt sad and embarrassed when the children laughed. He went to find Chubby.

A Quest for Answers

Together, Jerry and Chubby decided to find out why the kite wouldn't fly. They took the kite and walked deep into the woods. Chubby got very hungry. Jerry went to look for food for her.

He met a magical man who had a sack filled with everything in the world. Jerry asked for something for Chubby to eat. The man gave him a special cake. This cake tasted like whatever the person eating it liked best. Plus, it refilled itself every time you took a bite!

Meeting Magical Creatures

When Jerry returned to Chubby, they found the kite was gone. It was dark now, and night had begun. Suddenly, a magical creature called a wymp appeared. The wymp explained why the kite didn't fly earlier. It was daytime, and the moon wasn't out!

Jerry asked the wymp if it could take them to the moon to find his kite. The wymp agreed to help them.

Journey to the Moon

The two children and the wymp rode a comet up to the moon. There, they found Jerry's kite. They also met the beautiful and shimmering Lady of the Moon. The wymp quickly disappeared because it was scared of her.

The Lady of the Moon was not happy that the children had entered her home. She told them they needed to leave. Before the moon set, Jerry and Chubby rode the kite back home. They showed everyone in the village that the kite really could fly! The kite then returned to the sky and became a comet forever.
