The Last Bookstore is a very special independent bookstore in Downtown Los Angeles. It is located at 453 S Spring Street. Many people say it is California’s largest store for both new and used books!
The Story of The Last Bookstore
The Last Bookstore was started in 2005 by a person named Josh Spencer. At first, it was just an online shop. They sold books and other items from a loft in downtown Los Angeles.
Later, they decided to focus only on books. In December 2009, they opened a small bookshop on 4th and Main streets. It was a physical store where people could visit.
A New Home
The bookstore grew bigger and needed more space. On June 3, 2011, The Last Bookstore moved to its current location. This new home is inside the Spring Arts Tower at 5th and Spring streets.
The store is very large, covering 22,000 square feet. It used to be a bank! Now, books are spread out on two different levels. You can even find books inside the old bank vault, which is a really cool part of the store.
A Place for Pictures
The Last Bookstore is famous for its creative displays. The way they arrange books and decorations makes the store look amazing. Many people visit just to take pictures!
These unique displays attract lots of people who use Instagram. The store hopes that these visitors will also get interested in buying books. It's a fun way to bring more people into the world of reading.

In 2016, a short movie was made about The Last Bookstore. It was called Welcome to the Last Bookstore. The film tells the story of Josh Spencer, the owner.
The movie shares how Josh got hurt when he was young and could no longer use his legs. This event made him think about his life in a new way. The film shows how he was strong and never gave up, just like the bookstore itself.
