What is The Long Secret About?

This book continues the adventures of Harriet. She is a young girl who loves to spy. The story is set during summer.

Harriet's Summer Adventure

Harriet and her family are spending their summer. They are in a beach town called Water Mill. This town is located on Long Island. Harriet's friend, Beth Ellen, is also there. People sometimes call Beth Ellen "Mouse." She is staying with her grandmother.

Mysterious Notes Appear

Strange, secret notes start showing up everywhere. These notes have a religious tone. They also point out people's mistakes. Harriet is determined to find out who is leaving them. She starts to suspect anyone who reads the Bible.

Spying on Town Residents

Harriet often brings Beth Ellen along. They go on spying trips together. They watch Bunny, who manages the local hotel. Bunny also plays the piano. They also spy on the Jenkinses. This family is from the South. They are very focused on making money. Harriet's friend Janie appears in the story. Mrs. Plumber from Harriet the Spy also shows up.

Beth Ellen's Family Changes

Beth Ellen learns some big news. Her mother is coming back from Europe. Her mother left when Beth Ellen was five. She is returning with her new husband. Beth Ellen's grandmother expects her to be excited. But Beth Ellen feels nothing about the news.

Her mother, Zeeney, arrives. She is beautiful but not very deep. Zeeney is unhappy with her shy daughter. Beth Ellen's dislike for her mother grows. It finally bursts out in a big tantrum. This outburst helps Beth Ellen feel better. She becomes happier and more confident.
