The Master is a very important character in the British science fiction TV show Doctor Who. He is an evil Time Lord and one of the biggest enemies of the Doctor.
The Master first appeared in 1971. He was played by Roger Delgado. After Delgado passed away, other actors like Peter Pratt and Geoffrey Beevers played a very old-looking version of him. Then, Anthony Ainley took over the role in 1981 and played him until the show stopped in 1989.
In 1996, Eric Roberts played the Master in a Doctor Who TV movie. When the show came back, Derek Jacobi played him briefly. Then, John Simm became the Master in 2007. Later, Michelle Gomez took on the role in 2014, becoming the first female Master.
The Master's Story
The Master and the Doctor were friends when they were children. They grew up together on their home planet, Gallifrey. In the episode "The Sound of Drums" (2007), we see a quick look at the young Master.
When they were about eight years old, they both looked into something called the Untempered Schism. This was a special portal. It showed them the amazing power of the Time Lords. The Doctor believes that seeing this might have made the Master go a little mad.
His Goals and Powers
The Master wants to control the whole universe. He even chose his own name because he wants to be "the master of all matter."
One of his most famous powers is being able to hypnotise people. He does this by looking at them very intensely. He often says, "I am the Master, and you will obey me."
The Master and the Doctor are both very smart. They were classmates on Gallifrey and learned many things together. The Doctor has even called the Master a genius before knowing who he was. The Master is also known for always finding a way to escape, even from situations that seem impossible.
The Master's TARDIS
In the older Doctor Who series, the Master had his own TARDIS. Unlike the Doctor's TARDIS, the Master's could change its shape. It appeared as many different things, like a horse box or a fireplace. This was because its "chameleon circuit" worked perfectly.
In the newer series, it's not clear if the Master still has his own TARDIS. Sometimes he has to steal the Doctor's TARDIS to travel through time and space.
Other Adventures
The Master has also appeared in other Doctor Who stories. These include books and audio dramas (stories you listen to). These stories might not be part of the main TV show's timeline, but the Master is still the same character.
For example, Geoffrey Beevers has played the Master again in some audio dramas. There are also comic strips where the Master appears in new forms. In one comic, he survived the events of the TV movie by meeting a powerful being. He tried to take control of something called the Glory, but he failed and was sent away.
