The Mill Field is a wonderful natural area in Mill Hill, located in the London Borough of Barnet. It's a special place for nature, covering about 3.4 hectares. That's roughly the size of seven football fields! This public space slopes quite steeply down from a road called The Ridgeway.

People believe The Mill Field might be where an old windmill once stood. This windmill gave the area its name. Records show it existed as far back as 1321, but it was gone by 1754.

Discover The Mill Field

The Mill Field is known as a Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, Grade II. This means it's a very important place for local wildlife and plants. It's a great spot to explore nature right in the city!

What You Can See and Do

The Mill Field has two main parts. The upper part is like a park. It's well-kept and even has a football pitch. From here, you can enjoy amazing views across west London. It's a perfect spot to look out over the city!

Exploring Nature's Lower Slopes

The lower parts of The Mill Field are more wild and natural. Here, you'll find grassy areas and old hedgerows. These hedges show where fields used to be long ago. There are also scattered trees and patches of plants like creeping thistle.

A small stream flows through this area. It comes from a spring-fed pond. This pond is home to many different wetland plants. You might spot beautiful wildflowers like devil's-bit scabious and common tormentil. If you're lucky, you might even see a small copper butterfly fluttering by! This stream likely flows into the Burnt Oak Brook.

How to Visit The Mill Field

You can easily get to The Mill Field from The Ridgeway road. The entrance is close to Hammers Lane. It's a great place for a walk or to simply enjoy nature.
