The Story of The Mirettes
Starting as The Ikettes
The first official members of the Ikettes were Robbie Montgomery, Venetta Fields, and Jessie Smith. They sang backup for the popular duo Ike & Tina Turner. In 1965, the Ikettes had some big hits. Their song "Peaches 'N' Cream" reached the top 40 on the pop music charts. Another song, "I'm So Thankful", was a top 20 hit on the R&B charts.
A New Name and New Challenges
As the Ikettes became more popular, Ike Turner started sending different singers to perform under the Ikettes name. This happened while Robbie, Jessie, and Venetta were still touring with him. The original trio also felt they were not getting paid fairly for their hit songs. Because of these reasons, they decided to leave Ike & Tina Turner's group in late 1965.
After leaving, they tried to keep using the name "The Ikettes." However, they were not successful. So, in 1966, they signed with a record label called Mirwood Records and changed their name to The Mirettes. Their first two songs with Mirwood did not become hits.
Finding Success with "In the Midnight Hour"
The Mirettes then signed with Revue Records. This move brought them more success. Their first song on Revue, "In the Midnight Hour", became a hit. It reached number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 18 on the R&B chart. Their next few songs did not do as well. In 1968, they released a song called "Help Wanted" on Minit Records, but it also did not chart.
In June 1968, The Mirettes performed at a special event called the Soul-In show in Chicago. This event was organized by a group of television and radio announcers.
Later Years and Breaking Up
In 1969, The Mirettes moved to Uni Records. They released more songs, but these were not major hits. That same year, they sang on the soundtrack for a movie called The Lost Man. The music for the movie was produced by the famous musician Quincy Jones.
In 1970, The Mirettes signed with an independent record label called Zea Records. They released a song called "Ain't My Stuff Good Enough." Around this time, Venetta Fields left the group. Another former Ikette, Pat Powdrill, joined to replace her. The Mirettes continued for a short time but eventually broke up in 1971.
