The Missing Piece is a popular picture book for children. It was written by the famous American poet and artist Shel Silverstein. This book tells a simple yet deep story using words and drawings.

About The Missing Piece

What's the Story About?

The main character in the book is a round, circle-like shape. But this shape is not complete. It has a wedge-shaped part missing from its body. The circle feels sad and incomplete because of this missing piece.

So, the circle decides to go on an adventure. Its goal is to find the perfect piece to make itself whole. As it rolls along, it sings a special song:

Oh, I'm lookin' for my missin' piece
I'm lookin' for my missin' piece
Hi-dee-ho, here I go
lookin' for my missin' piece

The Journey Begins

During its journey, the circle meets many different pieces. Some are too big, some are too small, and others just don't fit right. It keeps rolling, enjoying the world around it. It sees beautiful scenery and sometimes stops to talk to a worm or a butterfly. The circle enjoys its search and the freedom of its journey.

Finding the Piece

Finally, the circle finds a piece that fits perfectly! It is exactly the right size and shape. Now the circle is complete and perfectly round. But something unexpected happens.

With the piece in place, the circle can roll much faster. It rolls so fast that it can no longer sing its song. It also cannot stop to enjoy the little things, like talking to a worm or a butterfly. The circle realizes that being complete means it can't do the things it loved doing before.

The circle then understands something important. It was happier when it was searching for the piece. The journey itself, with all its ups and downs, was more enjoyable than being complete. So, the circle gently puts the piece down and continues its journey, still searching, but happily.

The Sequel

Shel Silverstein wrote a sequel to this book. It was published in 1981 and is called The Missing Piece Meets the Big O. This second book tells a similar story, but this time it is from the point of view of a missing piece.
