The Moffat Museum is a fun children's book written by Eleanor Estes. It's the fourth and last story in her popular series called The Moffats. This book came out in 1983, which was forty years after the one before it! The story is about the four Moffat children who create their own special museum. They want to keep memories of all the cool things that happened in their lives as they grow up. Just like the other books in the series, The Moffat Museum takes place in a small town called Cranbury, Connecticut, way back in the early 1900s.
Creating the Moffat Museum
The idea for a museum suddenly came to Jane one day. She was looking at the family's barn when she thought, "The Moffats should have a museum!" It was a brilliant idea for a place to keep all their "first" things and treasured items.
The very first item they put in their new museum was a bicycle. This bike was special because all four Moffat children had learned how to ride on it. It held many memories for them!
Rufus the Waxworks Boy
Rufus's teacher was going to London for the summer. She told her class about a wax museum she planned to visit there. This gave Rufus a super cool idea! He decided he wanted to become a wax statue for their own Moffat Museum.
Rufus gathered all the crayons, candles, and bits of wax he could find around the house. He used them to transform himself into "Rufus, the Waxworks Boy." It was a funny and creative way to add to their growing collection of memories.
Growing Up and Remembering
Creating the museum was a great way for the Moffats to save their memories. Things were changing for the family. Little Rufus was growing up fast. Sylvie, the oldest sister, was getting ready to marry Reverend Mr. Abbot. Soon, Joey would start a full-time job.
Even though things were changing, the museum helped them celebrate their past. It allowed them to remember all the special moments as they faced the future together as a family.
