The National Art Center, Tokyo (often called NACT) is a famous art museum located in Roppongi, a lively area in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. It's a special place for art lovers! This museum was created through a partnership between the Agency for Cultural Affairs and a group of national museums. It stands on land that used to belong to the University of Tokyo.
The amazing building was designed by a famous architect named Kisho Kurokawa. It is one of the largest places for art exhibitions in all of Japan. You can easily get there by taking the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line to Nogizaka Station.

What Makes NACT Special?
Unlike many other national art museums in Japan, NACT is known as an 'empty museum'. This means it doesn't have its own permanent art collection. It also doesn't have a regular display of artworks or its own curators (people who choose and organize art).
How NACT Works
NACT is similar to a "Kunsthalle" in German-speaking countries. A Kunsthalle is a place that hosts temporary art shows. NACT provides a large, modern space for different groups and organizations to put on their own art exhibitions. These shows are often planned and organized by other art groups.
A Successful Idea
This unique way of running a museum has been very successful! In its first year, 2007, NACT hosted 69 exhibitions organized by art groups. It also put on 10 of its own shows. One of its most popular exhibitions was about the artist Monet. This show was held from April to July 2007. It became the second most visited art exhibition in the entire world that year!
Museum Design and Look
The way NACT looks, from its logo to its signs, was created by a talented graphic designer named Kashiwa Sato. His company, Samurai Inc., is based in Tokyo.
