What the Movie is About
King Edvard and Paige have been engaged for two years. Paige moves to Denmark to study medicine and be with Edvard's family. Their wedding is only a few weeks away.
But then, an old law is discovered. This law says that a Danish king must marry a princess. If he doesn't, he has to give up his crown.
Edvard's childhood friend, Princess Kirsten (Clemency Burton-Hill), comes to visit. She secretly plans to win Edvard over. She wants to become the Queen of Denmark. Also, her father, a Norwegian royal, owes a lot of money. He hopes Kirsten will marry into the royal family's wealth.
Challenges Before the Wedding
Kirsten offers to help Paige learn the Danish language. This is important because of a Danish marriage law. During a lesson, Paige tries to say something in Danish. But she accidentally says, "The queen is a green donkey that shakes bum and pees on flowers." This surprises and offends the royal family! What she meant to say was, "The queen has a green thumb and she waves her hand and flowers grow."
All the stress from the old law causes Paige and Edvard to break up. Edvard decides he must marry Kirsten instead. Paige chooses to stay in Denmark to finish her school semester.
A Clever Solution
While Kirsten and Edvard are planning their wedding, Paige notices something. She sees that Edvard's body language shows he doesn't love Kirsten. He is just going through the motions.
Paige then finds a clever way around the old law. Her friend Jake, who is a law student, helps her. They discover a newer law. This law was written 41 years after the marriage law. It says that any woman can become a princess. She just needs to show she knows the Danish Constitution. She must read it in Danish in front of the Parliament.
Luckily, the Danish Parliament is at the wedding! Paige reads the Constitution. The happy couple can finally get married. Before they can kiss, Kirsten bursts in. Her wedding dress is muddy and torn. Her father eventually pulls her away while she shouts, "I love you Edvard!" After that, Edvard and the now Queen Paige share a kiss. The movie ends with the newlyweds leaving the church.
