The Real Story of Stone Soup is a fun picture book written by Ying Chang Compestine and illustrated by Stéphane Jorisch. This book takes the classic "stone soup" folk tale, which is often linked to European folklore, and gives it a new twist by setting the story in China. It tells a clever tale about three brothers who outsmart a grumpy fisherman.
What's the Story About?
The story follows three brothers, the Chang brothers, who work very hard for a mean old fisherman. He always makes them work too much! One day, the fisherman gets angry because the boys forgot to make his lunch.
So, the brothers decide to make a tasty soup using fish and other things they found. But then, they come up with a clever plan to trick the fisherman. They dig a hole, fill it with water, and throw in some ordinary rocks.
They then convince the fisherman that these are special "flavored rocks" that make the soup delicious. The fisherman, who believes them easily, is amazed! The person telling the story even says this is the "real" way the stone soup story happened.
At the end of the book, you'll find a special note from the author. There's also a recipe for "Chang Brother's Egg Drop Stone Soup" that you can try!
