The Russell is an old apartment building in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was built way back in 1894.

This building is special because it's one of the few apartment blocks left from a time when many were built in the Main-Wellington-Chandler area. This part of the city had lots of apartment buildings by the year 1900. The Russell was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This means it's an important historical place worth protecting.

About The Russell Building

The Russell building is located on the corner of Austin and Irving Streets in Worcester. It's a four-story building made of red brick. It also has cool brownstone details.

The front of the building faces Austin Street. It has five sections, called bays. There are stone lines, called beltcourses, above and below the first floor. The windows on the first floor are rectangular. The windows above have rounded tops, like an arch. They have stone sills and brick tops.

The main entrance is in the middle. It's a round arch made of stone, which is a style called Romanesque. Above the entrance, there are two narrow windows together. The name of the building, "The Russell," is written between the second and third floors. Tall, thin columns, called pilasters, go up the sides of the middle part of the building. They go past the roof to form a decorative wall.

History of The Russell

The Russell was designed by a company called Barker & Nourse. It was built in 1894 and cost $25,000 at that time. Abigail Russell Parsons had it built.

The area around Main, Wellington, and Chandler Streets grew very fast in the 1880s and 1890s. It was a good spot because it was close to downtown Worcester. Many apartment buildings were built there. However, a lot of these old buildings have been torn down over the years. The Russell is one of the few that are still standing today, showing us what the area used to look like.
