About The Seattle Republican
Who Started This Newspaper?
The newspaper was founded by Horace R. Cayton Sr.. He was born in the American South and had been a slave when he was younger.
Horace Cayton's wife, Susie Revels Cayton, also worked at the newspaper. Starting in 1900, she was an associate editor. This meant she helped with the newspaper and wrote her own articles and short stories.
What Was Its Goal?
The Seattle Republican wanted to show African Americans in a good way. It also hoped to bring different groups of people together. The newspaper tried to do this by talking openly about important issues related to race.
Not everyone agreed with the newspaper's approach. This made it harder for the newspaper to continue publishing. It eventually closed down.
Today, copies of The Seattle Republican are kept in the collection of the Library of Congress. This helps people learn about its history.
