The Secret World of Benjamin Bear facts for kids

The Secret World of Benjamin Bear is a super fun Canadian cartoon series! It's all about the secret lives of teddy bears. This show continued the adventures from earlier specials like The Teddy Bears' Picnic (1989). It first aired on Family Channel from 2003 to 2009, with 52 exciting episodes.

The story follows Benjamin Bear, who now belongs to Max Tanner. Max is the son of Benjamin's first owner, Simon Tanner. Benjamin's best friend is Howie Bear, a younger teddy who is still learning the ropes. Just like in the original stories, Benjamin helps Howie understand the world and keep their secret safe!

Meet the Characters

Teddy Bears

• Benjamin "Ben" Bear (voiced by Jonathan Crombie) - Ben is the main hero of the show. He's an orange bear who wears a cool red vest. Max Tanner is his owner, and Howie is his best friend. Ben is always polite and helpful to everyone in the teddy bear world. He's very trustworthy, especially when new teddies need guidance. Did you know he's allergic to lavender? When he gets annoyed, he crosses his arms and taps his foot, but he'll never admit it!
• Howie Bear - Howie is Ben's best buddy. He's a yellow bear with a white t-shirt and green overalls. Howie is young and still learning, but he's always eager to discover new things. His owner is Eliza Tanner.
• Edgar of Old (voiced by John Stocker) - Imagine a 200-year-old teddy bear! Edgar is pale yellow and wears a navy blue vest. He was the very first "Teddy Bear," given to T.H. Roosevelt, which is where the name "Teddy Bear" comes from. He's the wise leader of the teddy community. Even though he's old and moves slowly, he's very smart. His owner is Miss Abby Periwinkle, and she's the only human who knows that teddies are alive!
• Ruby Red - Ruby is a sweet, dusty rose-colored bear who wears a red ribbon. Ben really likes her! She's owned by Mr. MacLaren, who runs a toy store. Ruby is always kind and ready to help Ben and Howie. In one episode, "Proudly Purple," Ruby and Ben even tell each other how much they care!
• Holly Bear (voiced by Emma Taylor-Isherwood) - Holly is a panda teddy bear and a close friend of Howie. They often play chess together, and Holly almost always wins! Her owner is Lindsay.
• Sebastian Biggleboar (voiced by Terrence Scammell) - Sebastian is a brown bear with a blue bowtie. He thinks he's better than everyone else and speaks with a fancy British accent. He loves to cause trouble for Ben and Howie. Sebastian has a big crush on Trixie Belle, thinking she's perfect. His owner is Bobbie.
• Raymond (voiced by Rick Jones) - Raymond is a purple teddy bear with a pink tummy. He was a carnival prize who ended up on the street. Ben and Howie found him and took him to MacLaren's toy store.
• Toot Sweet (voiced by Terrence Scammell) - Toot is a polar bear teddy with a red and green scarf and hat. He runs "Toot's," a diner where all the bears hang out. He's famous for his delicious honey shakes!
• The Clean-up Crew - These are three small brown teddy bears who wear black suits and sunglasses when they're working. They ride around in a toy gyrocopter with a bucket! Their job is to fix big problems in the teddy world.
• Winifred - Winifred is a pink teddy bear with glasses and a pale blue ribbon. She works on the teddy council and used to be in the teddy marching band.
• Trixie Belle - Trixie is a brown bear with an orange ribbon. She's a smart graduate from "Teddy Tech," and Sebastian really likes her.
• Mrs. Crackers - Mrs. Crackers is a beige teddy bear with glasses and a green shirt. She runs the teddy library.
• Felix - Felix was Laura's old teddy. Now he lives in Italy with his new owner, Antonia. He's golden yellow with a purple stitch on his tummy.
• General - This brown teddy bear is very strict and loves order, just like a military leader! He wears a military helmet and medals.
• Mr. Lister - Mr. Lister is a grayish-brown teddy with glasses and an orange shirt. He's in charge of the Teddy Relocation Center.
• Lily - Lily is a young beige teddy bear with a yellow dress. She's part of the General's marching band. She sometimes has trouble "going teddy" (freezing like a toy) when she gets too excited!
• Dr. Tiffany Tuff - Dr. Tuff is a brown teddy bear who works as a doctor at the Teddy Hospital. She wears a lab coat and a pink bow.
• Freddy - Freddy is a unique teddy bear, handmade from gray woolen socks.

Humans

• Max Tanner - Max is Benjamin's owner. His dad, Simon, gave Benjamin to him.
• Eliza Tanner (voiced by Emma Taylor-Isherwood) - Eliza is Howie's owner and Max's younger sister.
• Simon Tanner (voiced by Terrence Scammell) - Simon is Max's dad and Benjamin's previous owner. He's very creative and loves to invent things, even if they don't always work! He has a Bulldog named Slurp, who sometimes helps the bears.
• Miss Abby Periwinkle - Miss Periwinkle is Edgar's owner. She's the only human who knows that teddy bears can talk and move! When she was a child, Edgar saved her, and she saw him move. She promised to keep the teddy bear secret. Her house is a safe place where teddies don't have to hide.
• Mr. Maclarean (voiced by Terrence Scammell) - Mr. MacLaren is Ruby's owner. He's a Scottish man who owns a big toy store called "MacLaren's." He loves to tell stories about his travels around the world.
• Lindsay - Lindsay is Holly's owner and a friend of Eliza.

Animals

• Slurp - Slurp is the Tanner family's friendly Bulldog. He loves to play with humans and teddy bears. He's called Slurp because of his slobbery dog kisses!
• Chomper - Chomper is Bobbie's dog. He only likes Sebastian and enjoys chasing Ben and Howie around.
• Froth Moth - Watch out for Froth Moths! These are fictional moths that eat teddy bear stuffing. They are the most feared creatures in the teddy world. Luckily, they don't like lavender, which teddies use to keep them away.
• Patches - Patches is Eliza's cat. She loves to cause trouble, especially for Ben and Howie!

• MacLaren's Toy Store - This is Mr. MacLaren's big toy store. It has a secret teddy library, a meeting place for the teddy council, and many other hidden spots for bears!
• Toot Sweet's Garden Cafe - This is Toot Sweet's cozy cafe. Toot is famous for his amazing honey shakes, which all the bears love!
• Abby Periwinkle's House - This is Miss Periwinkle's home, where she lives with Edgar. It has many secret teddy hiding places. Her garden is often used for special teddy events, like Greeting Ceremonies for new bears.
• Tanner House - This is where the Tanner family lives. Ben and Howie have special "teddy tunnels" that help them move easily from room to room without being seen.
• Bobbie's House - This house is right next door to the Tanner House. Bobbie's dog, Chomper, acts as a guard dog at night.
• Teddy Hospital - The Teddy Hospital is a special place inside a real hospital. This is where teddies go if they have health problems, like needing new stuffing or stitches.
