The Story of an African Farm is a film from South Africa, released in 2004. In the United States, it was also known as Bustin' Bonaparte: The Story of an African Farm. The movie was directed by David Lister. It is based on a famous book written in 1883 by a South African author named Olive Schreiner. The book has the same name as the film.
What the Story is About
The movie takes place on a farm in the Karoo region of South Africa. This was in the 1870s. On the farm lives Tant Sannie, a strict woman. She looks after two girls: Em and Lyndall. Em is sweet, and Lyndall is very independent. It was Em's father's last wish for Tant Sannie to care for them.
The farm manager is a kind man named Otto. He also takes care of his son, Waldo. Waldo is a clever boy. He is busy building a model of a machine to shear sheep. He hopes this invention will make them all rich!
Things change when a strange man named Bonaparte Blenkins arrives. He has a big nose and a tall hat. He claims to be related to important people like Wellington and Queen Victoria. Tant Sannie, the girls' stepmother, believes him. Bonaparte Blenkins starts to have a lot of influence over her. This arrival turns the children's lives upside down.
The story follows Lyndall, Em, and Waldo as they grow up. It shows what life was like on a farm in South Africa a long time ago. The film is based on a book that was very popular when it came out. It gives a touching and often funny look at life in the late Victorian era.
