Story of The Tenth Circle
The main character is Trixie Stone, a high school freshman. Trixie tells people that her ex-boyfriend, Jason Underhill, hurt her at a party. Many students and people in the town quickly take Jason's side.
Trixie's parents, Daniel and Laura, get involved. Daniel is a quiet comic book artist. Laura is a college professor. Jason's life changes a lot because of Trixie's story. Later, Jason dies.
People start to think Trixie might be involved in Jason's death. They wonder if she pushed him from a bridge. Trixie then runs away to Alaska. This is where her father, Daniel, grew up. Daniel and Laura eventually find Trixie in Alaska.
At the end of the book, Laura tells Daniel something important. She confesses that she was present when Jason died. Jason was very upset and moved quickly towards Laura. Laura pushed him away, and he fell from the bridge. He held onto her hand for a moment, but Laura let go. This showed that Trixie was not guilty, but Laura had played a part in what happened.
The book ends with Daniel's newest comic. It shows a father and his daughter together again. The father saves his daughter from a very dark place.
Comic Book Parallel
The main story and smaller stories in the book are shown alongside Daniel's comic. His comic is also called The Tenth Circle. It is very similar to Daniel's own life and the events in the novel.
Inside the comic, there is a secret message. It says, "Nothing is easier than self-deceit, for what each man wishes that he also believes to be true." This quote is from a speaker named Demosthenes.
