Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Thornthwaite Inheritance is an exciting and a bit spooky children's mystery book. It was written by a British author named Gareth P. Jones. The book first came out in 2009.

What's the Story About?

The story is about thirteen-year-old twins, Ovid and Lorelli Thornthwaite. They are quite unusual kids. They always wear black clothes. They only eat plain food. They only listen to sad music. Their house has no electronics, just light bulbs.

But the strangest thing is their dangerous games. They seem to want to get rid of each other! On their 13th birthday, Lorelli and Ovid decide to stop their fighting. Lorelli brings a lawyer to their house. They add a new rule to their parents' will.

Their parents left them a huge inheritance. If one twin manages to get rid of the other before their 16th birthday, the other twin loses their share. Even with this new rule, strange and dangerous attempts keep happening. The twins suspect each other deeply. But they also work together to find out who is really behind these schemes.

The book ends with the twins promising to stop trying to harm each other. They hope for a better life. They discover the person behind all the trouble. This person is caught by a clever trap meant for the twins.

Book to Stage: Adaptations

Sometimes, a book is so good that it gets turned into a play or a musical. This is called an adaptation. The Thornthwaite Inheritance was made into a musical!

The musical first showed in Canberra, Australia. It played at the Erindale Theatre from September 13 to 18, 2020. Shaylie Maskell wrote the script and directed the show. Caleb Wells wrote and conducted the music. This musical was created by a new theatre group called Green Oak Theatre Company.
