The Thuggery Affair is the sixth book in a series about the Marlow family. It was written by the children's author Antonia Forest and first came out in 1965. This story follows Peter's Room and comes before The Ready-Made Family.
What is The Thuggery Affair About?
This book is a bit different from other Marlow family stories because it focuses more on the boys. The main characters are Peter and Lawrie Marlow, along with their friend and neighbor, Patrick Merrick. Nicola, who is often the main character in the series, is away visiting a friend. Ginty is also away, visiting her grandmother in France.
The story mostly takes place in Colebridge, a town near the Marlow family's home called Trennels. All the action happens during the spring school holiday.
The Main Story
In The Thuggery Affair, a local landowner named Miss Maudie Culver has a group of young people helping her with her pigeons. Patrick Merrick, who loves falcons, accidentally causes trouble when his falcon catches two of Miss Culver's pigeons.
Peter then notices something strange: one of the pigeons is carrying a small capsule. This makes them wonder what is going on.
Patrick decides to sneak into Miss Culver's pigeon house, which is a very large stone building. While he is inside, he is caught by the group of young people. There is a struggle, and the group quickly leaves.
The leader of the group, Jukie, takes Miss Culver's car and tries to get away. He also takes Patrick with him. During their escape, they talk about different things, including Jukie's past and serious topics like the H-bomb.
As they are driving, Patrick tries to stop them from hitting a police roadblock. The car swerves and crashes into a tree. Patrick is thrown safely from the car, but Jukie is tragically killed in the accident.
