The Story of the Suit
Jose Martinez is a young man living in East Los Angeles. He doesn't have much money. One day, he meets a mysterious man named Gómez. Gómez measures Jose and then takes him to a local bar.
Finding the Team
At the bar, Jose meets two other men. They are Dominguez, a guitar player, and Villanazul, who loves to share his ideas. Gómez shows them that all four men are the exact same size. This is important for his big plan!
The Dream Suit
Gómez tells them about a beautiful, white summer suit. It's the only one of its kind. The suit costs $100. None of them have enough money alone. But if they combine their money, they might buy it together. Each of the four men has $20. This gives them $80. They still need $20 more.
Adding a Fifth Friend
They find a man named Vámonos outside. He has the last $20 they need. Now, with five people, they have enough money! They buy the amazing white suit.
Sharing the Suit
The group decides how to share their new suit. Each person will get to wear it for one full night each week. But for the very first night, they will each wear it for just one hour. Then they will meet back at the bar.
- Dominguez wears it first. He plays his guitar and gets people dancing.
- Villanazul is next. He uses his hour to share a poem he wrote.
- Jose Martinez wears it third. He goes to see the girl he likes. She finally notices him because of the bright white suit! He learns her name is Celia Obregon.
Gómez's Choice
Gómez is next to wear the suit. Villanazul had a feeling that Gómez might try to leave town with the suit. But Gómez sees a painting of five men who look like their group. This makes him change his mind. He decides to stay and returns to the bar.
Vámonos's Turn
Finally, it's Vámonos's turn. Gómez is upset because Vámonos is not clean. The others help Vámonos take a bath. He hadn't had one in years!
Gómez then gives Vámonos many rules for wearing the suit:
- No eating messy tacos.
- No drinking wine.
- No smoking cigars.
- No standing under trees where birds might be.
- He also tells Vámonos to avoid a woman named Ruby Escadrío. Her boyfriend, Toro, might cause trouble and ruin the suit.
Vámonos goes to a club. The other four follow him. They watch as he ignores all of Gómez's rules! Ruby Escadrío shows up, and she and Vámonos dance. Toro gets angry, just as Gómez feared. The friends protect Vámonos. In the end, Vámonos gets hurt, but he quickly tells his friends to take off the suit. He doesn't want the paramedics to cut it off and ruin it!
The Suit's Future
Later, Dominguez irons the suit. He places it on a display. The friends are now sleeping on a rooftop. They don't have much, but they still have the suit. Vámonos is okay, even with his leg in a cast. Jose Martinez thinks about how much fun they had together. He realizes they wouldn't have had these great times if they were rich.
