A maze showing Theseus (blue) and the Minotaur (red)

The game Theseus and the Minotaur is a special kind of logic maze. It was created by a game designer named Robert Abbott. In this maze game, you play as Theseus. He was a famous king from Athens in ancient Greek stories. Your goal is to help Theseus escape from a tricky place called the Labyrinth.

This game is different from regular mazes. First, it's set on a grid, like a checkerboard. Second, it's not empty! A scary creature called the Minotaur is also in the maze. The Minotaur hunts you down. For every one step you take, the Minotaur takes two steps.

How the Minotaur Moves

The Minotaur moves faster than you, but its moves are easy to guess. It always tries to get closer to you. First, it checks if moving sideways (horizontally) will bring it closer. If not, it then checks if moving up or down (vertically) will bring it closer. If neither of these moves helps it get closer to you, the Minotaur just stays put. You, as Theseus, can also choose to skip your turn if you need to.

Game History

This unique maze game was first shared in 1990. It appeared in a book called Mad Mazes, written by Robert Abbott. Later, the idea for the game was also printed in a magazine from Britain called Games & Puzzles.
