Thomas, Count of Perche facts for kids
Thomas (born in 1195 – died on May 20, 1217) was a French nobleman. He held the title of Count of Perche, which was an important area in France. Thomas was the son of Geoffrey III, Count of Perche, and his mother was Matilda of Saxony. Matilda's parents were Henry the Lion, a powerful duke, and Matilda of England, who was a princess. Thomas died when he was quite young.
Thomas was only seven years old when his father passed away. Because he was so young, his mother, Matilda, and her new husband, Enguerrand III, Lord of Coucy, helped rule the County of Perche for him. This is called a "regency."
Thomas's Role in a Big War
In 1216, a major conflict happened in England called the First Barons' War. Some English noblemen, known as barons, were unhappy with their king, John Lackland. They decided to offer the English crown to Prince Louis of France, who was later known as Louis the Lion.
However, King John died soon after this. His young son, Henry III, became the new King of England. This changed the plans, but Prince Louis still fought against the English forces.
The Battle of Lincoln
A very important battle took place in 1217, known as the Battle of Lincoln. Thomas, the Count of Perche, was a leader of the French army during this fight. Sadly, Thomas was killed during this battle.
What Happened After Thomas's Death?
After Thomas died, Prince Louis of France eventually gave up his claim to the English crown.
Thomas had married a woman named Hélisende Rethel. They did not have any children together.
Following Thomas's death in 1217, King Philip II of France took control of several castles. These castles, including Moulins-la-Marche, Bonsmoulin, and Bellême, had been fought over for many years. Thomas's uncle, William, who was also a bishop, became the new Count of Perche.
