Sir Thomas Carus (around 1515 – July 5, 1571) was an important English lawyer and judge. He worked as a top judge in England, serving on the Queen's Bench. This was a very high court at the time.

Who Was Sir Thomas Carus?

Thomas Carus was born in Westmorland, England. His parents were William Carus and Isabel Leyburn. When he was a young man, in the 1530s, he joined a famous law school called the Middle Temple. This was a place where people learned to become barristers, which are lawyers who argue cases in court.

His Career in Law and Politics

Sir Thomas Carus had a busy career. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Wigan in 1547. An MP is a person chosen to represent their area in the country's government. He also represented Lancaster in Parliament in 1553 and 1555.

Later, in 1559, he became a Serjeant-at-Law. This was a special title for very experienced and respected lawyers. It meant he was one of the best lawyers in the country.

In 1567, he was made a Justice of the Queen's Bench. This was a very important job as a judge in one of England's highest courts. That same year, he was also knighted, which means he was given the title "Sir." He continued to serve as a judge until he passed away in 1571.

His Family Life

Sir Thomas Carus married a woman named Catherine. She was the daughter of Thomas Preston from Preston Patrick, Westmorland. They had a large family with three sons and three daughters.

His oldest son, also named Thomas, first took over the family's affairs. This son bought a large estate called Halton and Halton Hall. However, he also passed away soon after. Eventually, Sir Thomas Carus's youngest son, Christopher, became the head of the family. Christopher's family line remained Catholic for many years.
