Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Duncombe (born around 1683, died 1746) was a British politician. He was a member of the Tory group and served in the House of Commons, which is a part of the British Parliament. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for two different periods between 1711 and 1741.

Early Life and Family

Thomas Duncombe was born as Thomas Browne. His father, also named Thomas Browne, was a merchant. His mother was Ursula Duncombe. Thomas had an important uncle named Sir Charles Duncombe, who was a banker.

Thomas went to Christ Church, Oxford university in 1703 when he was 19 years old. Later, in 1709, he joined Inner Temple, which is a place where people study to become lawyers.

In 1711, Thomas inherited land and property in Yorkshire from his uncle, Sir Charles Duncombe. After this, he changed his last name to Duncombe. He got married to Sarah Slingsby on August 18, 1714. Her father was Sir Thomas Slingsby.

Political Career

Thomas Duncombe first became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1711. He was elected for the area called Downton without anyone running against him. This happened in a special election after his uncle passed away. He served as an MP for the rest of that Parliament. He was likely a Tory, just like his family.

He did not run for Parliament in the 1713 election. In 1720, he inherited more property from his father. From 1727 to 1728, he held an important local position called High Sheriff of Yorkshire.

Duncombe returned to Parliament in 1734, this time representing Ripon. He was supported by John Aislabie, whose daughter had married Thomas's brother-in-law. During this time, he often voted against the government's plans. Because of his votes, he was not asked to run for Parliament again in the 1741 election.

Later Life and Legacy

Thomas Duncombe passed away on March 23, 1746. He had three sons and two daughters. His oldest son, also named Thomas, later became a politician too.
